Ladies Helm Race - 2012 PDF Print E-mail

Fielding eight starters, the traditional Ladies Helm Race returning from the Yarmouth Rally started more under tidal thrust than wind, with other vessels loitering in the start area it made a challenging confused start...

With the wind almost dead downwind for the first leg to Saltmead various strategies were tried, goose winged, cruising chutes, beam reaching to play the angles, though none could keep up with Amanda on Blush the first to Saltmead. Nicky on Sandpiper making good progress through the fleet as some bunching occurred approaching Saltmead. Rounding the mark the beat, lee bowing back across to West Lepe, saw a number of position changes, pressing to windward Nicki on Dreamtime made some shrewd moves going from last to third or fourth by the time she rounded the mark to draw level with Nikki on Calisto, to head back up towards Lepe Spit.

At this point Amanda on Blush was untouchable and away for her third win, congratulations, while the rest of the fleet changed position again as the wind strength and direction varied they met the ebb tide, with Nicky on Sandpiper making outstanding progress to finish a very creditable second on handicap and Jennifer third on Calista.

The Ladies Helm race PDF Print E-mail
This year's Ladies Helm race was triumph of tide over wind. The departure from Yarmouth began with a light breeze which weakened to a mere zephyr. Many gave up and resorted to the iron topsail as the tide prevented the rounding of marks. The course had to be shortened but through focused perseverance, use of a tidal wind and encouragement from Mark, Amanda Pirie steered blush to win the Ladies Helm race for a second time. Well done Amanda.

Hotter than July PDF Print E-mail

Yarmouth2011

The Yarmouth rally has a history unsurprisingly for the time of the year, of being beset frequently by gale force winds and equinoctial rain storms. The 2011 Yarmouth rally will be remembered as one of the hottest weekends of the year with record breaking temperatures, light winds and wall to wall sunshine.

The Yarmouth rally was always going to be heavily subscribed and Rally officer Chris Glanton had the unenviable job of finding moorings for more than 27 boats on the Harold Hayles pontoon, plenty of other crews in addition, having booked themselves space on the walk ashore moorings. Chris managed to identify and manoeuvre boats in to slots with the precision of a watchmaker co-locating his finely machined pieces. He also managed to sustain a smile throughout!

Nicki a newbie to Cherbourg PDF Print E-mail

Here's my very untechnical write up for the Cherbourg Rally :-) - Nicki

Incompetent crew (me) aboard Stargazer. Cherbourg Rally

NickiApparently, just about everyone knows about the debacle that was my passport search, prior to the Cherbourg Rally and it wasn't until Thursday lunchtime that a courier arrived with my beautiful (not!) new passport in his clutches and I could let out a sigh of relief at the ebb of that particular anxiety and start to ride the crest of a new one.
